The Jewel of Seven Stars Bram Stoker 9781542334297 Books

One of Stoker's lesser known novels, The Jewel of Seven Stars does a lot of really good things but also lacks in many ways. This book intrigued me so much that I wrote my cumulative project for grad school about it. The thing that got me thinking the most was how Stoker portrayed powerful women. He showcased them as dangerous and monstrous. If you have time, or interest, closely read this book and chew over the themes. The book is short and easy to read, also the action is centered on a cursed mummy, and when are mummies ever uninteresting??

The Jewel of Seven Stars Bram Stoker 9781542334297 Books Reviews

ike Dracula the Jewel of the Seven Stars is well written. The story is suspenseful and compelling. The two endings are an interesting contrast, although from my perspective Stoker only wrote one and it is obvious which one.
Really did not know that Stoker had written anything beyond his best known "Dracula". This was very enjoyable to read. Highly recommend if you don't mind the less than modern style of writing.
Any book with Egyptian undertones is worth reading, and this is no exception. The story itself is well-crafted and imaginative. The Egyptian artifacts, mysterious attacks and history of Queen Tera are engaging. After struggling through the highly informative (and extremely tedious) chapter on religion, I couldn't put this book down until I reached the disappointing conclusion. Oh well. It was still a good read.
An interesting story but a very amateurish publishing job, I must say. I should have purchased the mass market paperback instead.
THE JEWEL OF SEVEN STARS is an atmospheric, supernatural, mummy novel originally published in 1903 in 20 chapters. Chapter XVI of that first edition is a lengthy essay entitled "Powers--Old and New" which contributes little by way of advancing the plot but which does add to the eerie mood. That first version contains the so-called sad ending. When a new edition was published in 1912, the book was reduced to 19 chapters by removing the aforementioned one, and a new, so-called happier ending was provided. It is not known if Stoker, who was in ill-health and died in 1912, actually wrote the new ending or if someone else (an editor, perhaps) did, and if that were the case, whether or not Stoker approved of it. (Stoker was known to have altered earlier word-products to make them more saleable, so it would not have been without precedent.) Neither ending -- each enigmatic in its own way -- is particularly satisfying, but the only way to be certain to get what Stoker originally intended and the ending he undoubtedly wrote is to go with the earlier, lengthier, more impactful version.

Having said all that, the story is definitely creepy. While this was written long before the old Universal mummy movies, it evokes something of the feel of those old black-and-white movies but with a heavier dose of mysticism and the occult. This mummy is no maniacal rampaging monster but a spirit-consuming, trans-migrating soul-seeker. In fact, the mystical intensity increases until the very end (either one) when unleashed psychic fury wreaks havoc -- and ultimately proves to be something of a let-down. Imperfect as it may be, however, this is one relentlessly dark and heavy novel, and those readers who can make do with a less-than-perfect conclusion should find in everything that leads up to it, enough to satisfy their goosebump quota.
This story is really good. Don't let it's age turn you away either - it is very easy to read and it flows along very well. There are a few places were you might wonder why people behave the way they do, but keep in mind that this was written in 1903, and that's just how society was back then. Having said that, and keeping it in mind while reading, the only downside for me was the ending. I'd give this 5 stars if it didn't seem like Mr. Stoker got tired of writing and whipped up a mysterious "the reader has to fill in the blanks" type of ending.

Of course, that seems to be a trend as well for some of these old classics. Sometimes it works, but for me, and in this particular case, it was irritating. Overall though, I enjoyed it very much, and I won't feel bad recommending it, as it is free.
I got this as a freebie on . It's really great! You are plunged right into the story, and have to find out as you read who the beautiful young lady is, what the nature of her father's studies are, what dangers surround everyone, and the importance of things that would not normally be important. The effect leaves one a little disoriented which really adds to the atmosphere of the story. The ending at first seemed a bit too tidy, but then I started to think, what if like so much else in the story it isn't what it first appears...?

Victorian in style and setting, with romance, Egyptology, mysticism, science and the supernatural. No vampires whatsoever. Doesn't need them.
